I mark out points on my paper then use a ruler to pick up lines and mark out the main features, I'll do this step by step in one of my next WIP's if it will be useful.

Well, you do a great job of making your portraits look very accurate! I'm still trying to get better at drawing realistically, and not all of my "copied" pics are 100% perfect.

Neither are mine, but each one get's me nearer.
Without measuring and using landmark techniques it is impossible to get a perfect image. Leonardo DaVinci devised techniques and used gridding to get a great piece of art. If you start it wrong, then there is no way you can finish it right :)
Pratice sketching and using your pencil tip and thumbnail for measuring against a printed image, do this to place feature points. Try also drawing the image freehand and then compare the two.
you will be surprised at the huge difference.
